The Jamaica Symphony Orchestra Academy offers a structured pathway for musicians of all ages and abilities. Our program includes five progressive levels of orchestral training, designed to help musicians grow from beginner to preprofessional.

Beginning String Classes (from 4 yrs) : *Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass

Introduces basic techniques in string performance using Suzuki and Traditional methods. No prior experience necessary although the preparatory class is recommended for very young students with no musical background.

Curriculum: Suzuki and Traditional methods

Pre-Twinkle Class (from *3 yrs):
No instrument needed

Intended for those with no music background, this class introduces students to foundational skills necessary for successful music learning: pitch, rhythm, basic theory and even *instrument identification (which instrument(s) are most suitable for you/your child).

Curriculum: Prodigies Music

*Note: Children under 7 yrs need to be accompanied by a participating Adult

Beginning Woodwinds & Brass Class (from 5 yrs): jFlute, jClarinet, jHorn (pre-brass instrument)

An innovative introduction to woodwind and brass instruments. No prior experience is necessary although the preparatory class is recommended for very young students with no musical background.

Beginning Orchestra for Levels 1-2

Entry-level orchestra with emphasis on building technique, sight-reading and ensemble performance skills in an encouraging environment!

Jamaica Concert Orchestra (JCO)

Intermediate Orchestra for Levels *2-5

This orchestra is designed for student musicians who can read music and have at least two years of experience on their instrument. Rehearsals feature appropriately graded repertoire, focusing on the development of technique, musicianship, and ensemble skills, while introducing early standard literature.

Jamaica Youth Symphony Orchestra (JYSO)

Advanced Orchestra for Levels *5-8

The advanced orchestra is for talented and dedicated student musicians that are ready to learn and perform standard orchestral literature alongside exciting new works by contemporary composers. JYSO members receive exclusive training opportunities including sectionals and coaching with top professional musicians, a concerto competition, and multiple performance opportunities in Jamaica and Overseas.

Ace your auditions abroad by mastering the standard excerpts and repertoire essential for professional orchestras! This class prepares students for competitive auditions by refining key excerpts and building the technical skills and musical interpretation needed to be successful.

String Pedagogy Seminar: (For string teachers)

Discover how to set your string students up for success at every level! Learn to recognize when a student is ready to advance, address developmental challenges, and explore internationally recognized performance techniques. Additionally, gain insight into selecting the right repertoire for auditions and scholarships worldwide.

First ensemble experience for adult musicians. (Levels 1-3)

Whether you're new to your instrument or returning after a break, this group focuses on building skills, teamwork, and confidence. It's the perfect opportunity to make music with others in a relaxed, collaborative setting.

Tropical Rhythms Orchestra (TRO)

Full orchestra experience for adult musicians. (Levels 4-8)

A more advanced ensemble that is perfect for players looking to challenge themselves, improve their ensemble skills, and explore diverse musical styles. With a focus on creativity and collaboration, Tropical Rhythms provides a dynamic and engaging environment for musicians ready to take their playing to the next level.

Orchestral Appreciation Class (no instrument required)

This class offers a journey into the world of classical music, designed to deepen your understanding and appreciation of the genre. Through a blend of historical context, exploration of key composers, and focused listening, we'll explore how a symphony orchestra functions and what to listen for during a concert. By the end of the course, you'll not only have a richer connection to the emotional and intellectual depth of classical works, but also feel confident discussing the nuances of orchestral performances and conversing intelligently with others about this timeless art form.
